Burlington boys soccer team ekes out win at Fairfield

A late goal lifted Burlington High School to a 1-0 victory in a Southeast Conference boys soccer match at Fairfield Thursday night.

The win moved the Grayhounds into a tie for second place in the conference, Burlington and Washington, which fell to Fort Madison Thursday, are both 5-2 in the conference. Fort Madison leads the SEC at 7-0.

Braden Schoene scored a goal off a deflection in the 78th minute for the win. Goalkeeper Caydan Lowary earned the shutout with eight saves.

Burlington, now 6-3 overall, plays a conference match at Mount Pleasant Monday. Fairfield fell to 2-6 (2-5).

FORT MADISON 3, WASHINGTON 1: Mitchell Pothitakis figured into all three Fort Madison goals in a Bloodhound victory at Washington.

Pothitakis scored two goals and assisted Phillip Goldie on his goal. Austin Miller and Nathan Wiggins each had an assist. Reiburn Turnbull had three saves, including one save of a penalty kick.

Fort Madison remained unbeaten in seven Southeast Conference matches and improved to 8-3 overall. The Bloodhounds play at Keokuk Monday. Washington slipped to 8-2 (5-2).

GIRLS SOCCER

FORT MADISON 1, WASHINGTON O: Coree James scored the match's only goal in the second half to lift the Bloodhounds to as Southeast Conference win at Fort Madison's Baxter Athletic Complex.

James was assisted by Teagan Snaadt.

"Today we played a good full game, which is something I've wanted the team to focus on," Fort Madison coach Carrie Burken said. "Our communication and defense were consistent throughout the game and we were able to connect passes and look to cross the ball to the far post on offense. The girls played well."

Fort Madison (7-2, 6-1) plays at Keokuk Monday. Washington fell to 7-4 (3-4).

PREP SOFTBALL

MERCER COUNTY 19, STARK COUNTY 5: The Golden Eagles erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to preserve victory at Toulon, Illinois.

Mercer County banged out 15 hits. Riley King and Madi Frieden had three hits each and Gabriella McPeek and Ellie Smock had two hits each. Smock had a triple and King and Frieden each doubled. Frieden had four RBIs. Hallie Schreurs was the winning pitcher.

Olivia Orwig went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Stark County. Shanna Peterson pitched the loss.

PREP BASEBALL

WEST CENTRAL 13, GALVA 0: The Heat scored 10 runs in the second inning and cruised to victory at Stronghurst, Illinois.

West Central had six hits, one each by Andy Lumbeck, Carson Long, Hayden Eisnnicher, Landon Winters, Peyton Woodbury and Ross Vancil., Winters was the winning pitcher.

West Central improved to 3-12.

WEST HANCOCK 8, CENTRAL 4: Zane Humphry had a home run, a double and five RBIs to lead the Titans past Camp Point Central at Hamilton, Illinois.

West Hancock's Colin Lemaire and Adam Harness both doubled and singled.

MACOMB 13, ILLINI WEST 11: The Chargers scored six runs in the final two innings, but couldn't catch Macomb at Carthage, Illinois.

No. 9 hitter Carter Chapin led Illini West at the plate with a triple and two singles in three trips. Drew Dooley, Ethan James and Shawn Watkins Jr. each had two hits for the Chargers. Bradyn Robertson tripled and had two RBIs. Dooley also had two RBIs. Drake Mudd doubled.

BOYS GOLF

WAPELLO 187, HIGHLAND 205: Wapello's Cooper Garrison and Zach Harbison tied for medalist honors with 46s in a dual win over Highland at Heritage Oaks golf course.

Wapello's Casey Short carded a 47, Codder Malcolm had a 48 and Dawson Tipps and Matt McGowan each shot a 52.

MEDIAPOLIS 185, LONE TREE 229: Mediapolis's Ben Wolter was medalist with a 41 and the Bulldogs beat Lone Tree at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside.

Also playing for Mediapolis were Jonathan Ford (47), Grady Gunn (47), Grant Hilton (50), Jacob Grier (51) and Kamden Stotlar (52). Jox Boxwell led Lone Tree with a 51.

GIRLS GOLF

KEOKUK'S AMES MEDALIST: Keokuk's Natalie Ames was medalist with a 44 but Pella won the triangular at Fairfield Golf & Country Club.

Pella won with 197 strokes. Fairfield was second at 203 and Keokuk came in at 204.

Also playing for Keokuk: Anna Hinton (52), Heidi Rose (54), Allison Ames (54), Kaylie Watson (55 and Chloe Ruhl (58).

ARROWS TOP HUSKIES: Highland's Dani Kraus was medalist with a 53 at Heritage Oaks golf course, but the Huskies lost the dual because they didn't have enough players for a team score.

Olyvia Malone led Wapello with a 59. Other Arrows were Liv Fuller (64), Bryn Wiley (68) and Zarahy Espinosa (88).

BULLETTES POST WIN: Mediapolis topped Lone Tree since the Lions didn't have enough players for a team score at Blue Top Ridge near Riverside.

The Bullettes carded 230 strokes, paced by a 42 by Olivia Hines. Also playing for Mediapolis; Cara Knoke (60), Hannah Russell (63), Taryn Miller (65), Macy Steffener (65) and Cami Whitaker (70).

QND 12, WEST HANCOCK 1: Quincy Notre Dame scored eight runs in the first inning and coasted past the Titans at Quincy, Illinois.

West Hancock was limited to three hits in the five-inning game. Kendall Nagel had two singles and Jordyn Climer doubled.
