Burlington-to-NYC Amtrak start date announced

Amtrak will begin service to Burlington, Vergennes, and Middlebury on July 29, the Vermont Agency of Transportation announced Thursday.

Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express currently runs between Rutland and New York City. Construction on the Burlington tracks and Union Station began in fall 2020.

“This new service will benefit Vermonters in countless ways, all while helping to grow our economy,” Gov. Phil Scott said in a press release.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger also praised the news. “Very soon, we will be able to climb aboard a train in downtown Burlington, and arrive in New York City in time for dinner," Weinberger said in a statement. "This long-desired service will give a boost to our economic recovery at a critical time, and give travelers a new, lower-carbon connection to New York and the rest of the Amtrak system."

The Ethan Allen Express service southbound will leave Burlington daily at 10:10 a.m. and arrive at Penn Station in New York City at 5:45 p.m. The Ethan Allen Express northbound will leave Penn Station at 2:21 p.m. and arrive in Burlington at 9:55 p.m.

Fares from Burlington to New York City will begin at $75, with more details being released soon. According to VTrans, 50% promotional fares will be offered this summer.

VTrans will host a celebratory public event at Union Station in Burlington on July 29 from 9 a.m. until the first train departs at 10:10 a.m.

The train will have four coach cars and a cafe car. Passengers have access to Wi-Fi and can store bikes in bike racks.
