Burlington School District to host free back-to-school kick-off event at Camp Eastman

The Burlington School District will host a back-to-school kick-off event on Saturday with a special day of fun and activities at Camp Eastman in Nauvoo, Illinois.

The event is free for all district students and families, and transportation to the camp will be provided at no cost.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

A free lunch will be served to the first 200 attendees from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Activities attendees can expect to participate in include RC car racing, canoeing, hiking, GaGa Pit, mega Jenga!, and a large chess board.

The event will be led by local groups that include the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Burlington Public Library.

The event is also sponsored by the district's PiECES after-school program, Club M youth mentoring, and V.I.B.E. virtual learning academy.

Buses will depart from the following schools at these times:

  • 9:30 a.m.: Grimes Elementary

  • 11:00 a.m.: Burlington High School (Cafeteria Entrance)

  • 12:30 p.m.: Sunnyside Elementary

This is the second year the event has been held.

"We had approximately 140 attend last year's event and look to have a larger group this year," said Cassie Gerst, supervisor of grants and community outreach for the district. "The goal is to welcome back our families by inviting them to a fun, outdoor experience located at one of the PiECES partner's sites, which is the Boy Scouts of America's Camp Eastman."
