Republicanism was the major issue on the ballot for Burlington voters in Tuesday’s primary election.

While most of the races on the ballots for both Republicans and Democrats were uncontested, one of the highlights was the race for the U.S. Senate seat held for the past six terms by Republican Chuck Grassley.

“Term limits are a good idea,” Gary Wagler told The Hawk Eye. “You don’t need to be in there forever like Grassley."

There were a total of five candidates on the ballot for Iowa senator — three Democrats and two Republicans.

On the Republican side, Grassley faced off against Jim Carlin, a state senator from Woodbury.

On the Democrat side, Navy Admiral Michael Franken faced off against former U.S. Rep. Abby Finkenhauer and Glenn Hurst. The winners from each election will face off in November.

While Wagler said he was focused on getting a Democrat into office, four others who did not wish to give their name said they felt Republican issues, particularly supporting former President Donald Trump, were the most important issues on the ballot.

Gregory Perry said he votes for whoever he believes will be best for the economy, though he did not specify which primary candidate or candidates he thinks fit that bill.

As the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, Jennifer Egger said her biggest concern is to protect women's reproductive rights, particularly when it comes to abortion, which Egger believes is a personal decision that should be left to individuals.

“It is very important for myself, my sisters, my daughter, to be able to choose,” Egger said. “It is very important to me that if they are ever in a position where they need to choose that it is their personal choice."
