Burlington's Favorite Charities: People Helping People

BURLINGTON, MA — In a typical year, the holiday season is the time when many nonprofit organizations have to turn away volunteers.

But 2020 is not a typical year, and the coronavirus pandemic has left many local charities with fewer donations and volunteers. Earlier this week, Fidelity Charitable released a study showing that two-in-three volunteers had decreased or stopped contributing time to nonprofit organizations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

The study also found that 64 percent of people weren't sure how to find or participate in remote volunteer activities nonprofits have offered since the start of the crisis.

We asked Burlington neighbors what your favorite charities are, as part of an effort to help increase awareness of the nonprofits. The first answer was no surprise: People Helping People.

An anonymous neighbor wrote: "This is a locally run organization, that helps the community, not only in Burlington but the area."

"During the Spring with COVID they worked to feed the kids who normal got the school breakfast and lunch program," they continued. "They adapted their food distribution and kept feeding those in need in Burlington. They are continuing with their other fund raising on line. They are a way that Burlingtonians can help Burlington."

We're collecting the responses and publish profiles of readers' favorite local charities throughout the holiday season.
