Burned-Out Buses on Colombo Street in Aftermath of Violent Protests

Burned-out buses stood outside the municipal council building in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday, May 10, in the aftermath of violent protests in the crisis-hit country the day before.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday and a nationwide curfew was put in place amid violent scenes. The homes of several Sri Lankan political figures were reported by local media to have been attacked, and some burned, including the ancestral home of the Rajapaksa family.

Video showing the buses was taken by local journalist Zulfick Farzan.

The Daily Mirror reported that more than 210 people had been admitted to Colombo National Hospital and one police officer had died after clashes involving pro- and anti-government groups and police. Credit: Zulfick Farzan via Storyful
