Burning candle caused Dumfries house fire, fire marshal says

DUMFRIES, Va. (DC News Now) — Fire officials said that a burning candle started a house fire that displaced five people in Dumfries on Wednesday evening.

The Prince William County Fire Marshal said that crews responded to the 17000 block of Denali Place in the evening for a townhouse fire. When they got there, there was visible smoke from the front of the house.

One adult was inside at the time and evacuated safely after finding the fire. Two adults and three children were displaced in total.

The Fire Marshal’s Office determined that a candle left burning near combustibles caused the fire.

“This fire could have been prevented. The Fire Marshal’s does not recommend the use of candles. If they are used, they should never be left unattended, used near combustibles, or placed in a location where children or pets could be injured or accidentally tip the candle over,” a statement from the Fire Marshal’s Office said.

Officials also reminded people about the importance of smoke detectors in giving a heads-up to evacuate in the case of a fire.
