Mountain Island Charter's Daniel, North Gaston softball's Smith earn top honors

Here are the Gastonia and Shelby area’s top athletes for the week of March 6-11, as voted by readers of The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominations are compiled from information provided by area coaches, athletic directors and team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to Twitter.

Boys Athlete of the Week

Reggie Daniel, Mountain Island Charter track and field

Daniel received 50.2% of last week’s vote tally, outpacing baseball standouts Patrick Blee of South Point and Kings Mountain’s Zane Brockman. He was nominated after winning the 110- and 300-meter hurdle events with times of 16.69 and 42.42 seconds at the Catawba Shores 1A/2A pre-conference meet on March 10. He also helped the Raptors’ 4x200-meter relay team to a win.

Girls Athlete of the Week

Skylar Smith, North Gaston softball

Smith received 2,312 votes last week, running away with athlete of the week honors. The sophomore outfielder was nominated after batting .571 with two doubles, five RBIs and a run scored.
