Burrillville police ID woman whose body was found in pond

Burrillville police have released the name of a woman whose body was found in Little Round Top Pond on Sunday and said there was no evidence of foul play in her death.

The police believe Jane Finkelstein, 67, of the village of Harrisville, fell through the ice on Saturday.

Finkelstein was "an avid outdoor enthusiast and was known to hike in this area frequently," Burrillville Police Chief Col. Stephen Lynch said in a news release. Her body was recovered about 20 feet from the shore, partially submerged in the water and on broken ice, Lynch said.

The Burrillville Police Department and the Rhode Island State Medical Examiner’s Office found no evidence of foul play with the circumstances of her death, Lynch said.

The Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of death as an accidental drowning, Lynch said. Exposure is a contributing factor, he said. With arctic air moving into the region, the temperature in Rhode Island dropped below zero overnight Friday and remained frigid Saturday.

On Sunday, the police said they were notified at 10:48 a.m. about a body that was "partially submerged in the water."

The area is a fishing and hiking site off Brook Road in the Harrisville section of Burrillville.

Finkelstein was a child psychologist and had an office and practice in the Holliston, Massachusetts area, Lynch said.
