Wintry weather is making its way across Central Canada this week, with bouts of freezing rain, ice and snow infiltrating Ontario.

Quebec will not be spared from the frozen precipitation, with a burst of snow anticipated to move into southern areas such as Montreal in time for the Thursday morning commute.

The good news is Montreal will miss the heaviest snow, which will fall across northern sections of the province, with as much as 30+ cm possible in some of the hardest-hit areas.

With many drivers yet to have their winter tires on, it's important to plan ahead and adjust to the changing conditions accordingly.

Thursday

Snowfall is expected for most areas in southern Quebec, with much of the region on the cold side of the system.

At this time, around 5-8 cm of snow could fall in and around Montreal through Thursday. However, there is some uncertainty that comes with this forecast.

FORECAST: Still 20+ cm of snow to come over northern Quebec, Labrador

The setup is complicated since models are having trouble with the exact temperatures, which could have an effect on snowfall amounts.

A line of ice pellets pushes eerily close to the Quebec-U.S. border, lessening snowfall totals for the southern areas and Eastern Townships. Into the afternoon there is the chance for some light scattered precipitation to move through, which could range from rain, to freezing drizzle, and even ice pellets.

Regardless, Thursday morning's commute may be a slower one than usual, until the system eventually dries out into the afternoon.

The last snow that the greater Montreal area received did not stay on the ground due to the temperatures being too mild. This time, we anticipate a cold morning on Thursday, which could result in some accumulating snow.
