Buses replace train service at Alewife after wild weekend crash damages T station, injures girl

Shuttle buses are replacing train service from the Alewife Red Line T stop after a crash Saturday left the station significantly damaged.

Cranes were on scene Monday morning repairing a gaping hole in the glass roof of the train station after the MBTA said a driver intentionally rammed into the side of the top floor of the parking garage Saturday afternoon.

The car was seen dangling off the side of the garage.

The crash sent a 10,000-pound slab of concrete smashing through the roof of the station into the lobby. The barrier was removed from the station and was outside on the ground Monday morning.

Investigators said a young 14-year-old girl suffered minor injuries from falling glass and debris in the lobby.

“It was a Saturday morning, if this was a Monday morning, the circumstances would be a lot different,” said Cambridge Fire Chief Thomas Cahill.

The MBTA said shuttle buses will replace train service from Alewife to Davis Square for the entire week.

The parking garage will be closed through at least Monday.

It’s unclear if the driver who caused the damage is facing any charges.
