Midway between the first quarter of the girls' basketball game between Bushland and Dumas Tuesday night, things were all knotted up with no team holding an advantage.

How things change in such little time.

The Lady Falcons scored the final seven points of the opening quarter and went on to score 19 unanswered as part of a 23-2 run. That gave them enough separation from the Demonettes that Bushland could breathe easy the rest of the way as it came out with a 53-35 victory. Bushland is now 5-3 on the season and ranked eighth in the TABC poll while Dumas is now 3-7 on the year.

It didn't look easy early on as it was 11-11 midway through the first. Shots started falling for Bushland after that, however, as the Lady Falcons pulled ahead 18-11 by the end of the opening quarter.

Bushland opened the second with a 12-0 run and held Dumas to just a pair of free throws and a three-pointer the entire quarter as the Lady Falcons carried a 36-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. Head coach Ty Mayfield said the spark was kicked off by a discussion the Lady Falcons had about doing what they know they're capable of.

"We just talked about some of the things that we've been focusing on the past couple of weeks and that's running our offense," he said. "I felt like we came out and we were rushing it a little bit. We just needed to work the ball, get it moving and then get it inside to our post. We think that's where our strength lies with Emma (Troxell) and Charley (Spinks) and Chloe (Cochran)."

Cochran left the game early to take part in her revival week but managed three points before then. Troxell led the way offensively with 15 points while Spinks chipped in 12. Troi Peart added eight while freshman Brooklyn Boyett chipped in nine.

For the Demonettes, the game was a building block aimed to prepare them for a challenging district schedule. Kamryn Cox led the way with 16 points on an efficient 6-of-13 shooting from the floor. Camila Parra had a solid night as well, putting up 11 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. The rest of the team was held to just eight total points, however, as Dumas struggled with turnovers throughout the evening.

"We didn't quit at all in the game," head coach Adam Esses said. "We had a good end to the fourth quarter and did some good things that we wanted to try to get us ready for district. We had a really good week last week at the tournament that we went to down in Breckenridge. Hopefully we can build on that momentum because it's a quick turnaround."

Bushland takes on Claude next week on Tuesday while Dumas will face Canyon this Friday.
