Local attorney opens new Shelby office

SHELBY — Local attorney Jonathon “JC” Elgin has opened his primary office location in downtown Shelby. The Shelby resident and 2006 Shelby High School graduate purchased the historic Shelby Telephone Company building situated at 6 Water St. The building was constructed around 1900 and was most recently occupied since the 1970s by Poland, Depler, and Shepherd, Co., LPA.

Elgin previously served as civil counsel for various county and township offices with the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office. In December 2020, he returned to private practice in Lima and Ontario, Ohio. Elgin will maintain his Ontario office in addition to the main office in Shelby. He concentrates his practice on estate planning and administration, probate law, real estate law, business and tax law, and bankruptcy. Elgin handles guardianship cases and works with both Catholic Charities of Richland and Mid-Ohio Guardianship Services guardianship programs.

Elgin is past president of the Shelby Y Board of Directors and was instrumental in the formation of the YMCA of North Central Ohio. He served on the Shelby Civil Service Commission for six years, five as chairman. He sits on the Richland County Board of Elections.

Ohio businesses warned about sham mailer

COLUMBUS — Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose has issued a warning to Ohio business owners about a deceptive letter offering to sell a government service that the State of Ohio provides for free.

One of the newest in a line of suspicious, misleading, and even fraudulent mailers involves Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings. This mailer claims to “obtain and mail a hard copy of your Ohio UCC Financing Statement Form” for a $90 fee. The same PDF document being referenced can be downloaded and printed for free at the Ohio Secretary of State’s website at ucc.ohiosos.gov.

The Ohio Secretary of State's office has taken steps to refer this matter to the consumer protection division at the Ohio Attorney General's Office for additional investigation and prosecution, if warranted.

Scams targeting businesses have been on the rise nationwide in the last decade. Similar misleading solicitations have targeted Ohio businesses for services such as certificates of good standing, annual reports, and EINs.
