Firelands Electric announces Lunch with a Lineman electrical safety contest

NEW LONDON — As part of National Electrical Safety Month, Firelands Electric is sponsoring a new contest for children who live in a home receiving power from the cooperative.

To help teach Firelands’ younger co-op members about the importance of safety equipment used by linemen, the cooperative is sponsoring a contest for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

To enter, students should submit a completed contest form, using the supplied word bank to identify the safety equipment pictured. Entries will be accepted through June 9 and may be returned by mailing them to: Safety Contest, Firelands Electric Cooperative, P.O. Box 32, New London, OH 44851. Entries may also be dropped off at the co-op office or emailed to members@firelandsec.com. Blank entry forms are available in the May issue of Ohio Cooperative Living magazine, at the co-op office, and on Firelands’ website at firelandsec.com/contests.

Children who correctly identify at least six of the eight pieces of safety equipment will have their names entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three spots for a special behind-the-scenes look at electric utility equipment and lunch with a Firelands lineman. Winners will be featured on the cooperative’s social media and in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

If you have any questions, contact the member services department at 1-800-533-8658.

DeWine expands Ohio's skill-based hiring practices

COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has signed an executive order which builds upon Ohio's nation-leading efforts to be a model employer in skill-based hiring practices. The skill-based hiring movement focuses on specific coursework, skills, experience, and training and de-emphasizes previous qualification requirements that were stated in terms of academic degrees.

Ohio was one of the first and leading states to enact administrative rules establishing skills-based hiring practices. The executive order adds three additional initiatives to this effort:

• The Ohio Department of Administrative Services (DAS) will designate a coordinator to work with career-technical education programs to identify and recruit program graduates for vacant positions with the State;• DAS will also conduct a comprehensive review of all classifications where an academic degree is required by statute to identify where job modernization could be accomplished through amendments to statute; and• DAS will formalize and enhance its policy on skill-based hiring, adding components including a job matching tool on application portals; ensuring agency, board and commission compliance with the administrative rule; and reviewing current minimum qualifications which are position specific or preferred in hiring practices to ensure they are not stated in terms of academic degrees.

DeWine also ordered that a report on these reviews be provided within 180 days.
