BUSINESS BUZZ: Coalition to honor community 'Champions for Children'

∎ On March 23, Safe Children Coalition will present its inaugural Giving Breakfast, during which four “Champions for Children” will be honored for their contributions to caring for children in our community.

The 2023 honorees are: Michele Grimes, attorney, Williams Parker Attorneys at Law; Rick Oswald, senior vice president, CMSA Architects; and Bobbie and Floyd Price, Guardian Angels of SW Florida.

The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Michael’s On East, 1212 East Ave. S., Sarasota. SCC is partnering with lead sponsor Sunset Automotive Group, on this event; additional sponsorships of $500-$15,000 are still available.A practicing attorney by day, Grimes has spent many years supporting area nonprofits, especially those that help children. She has served on the boards of organizations including Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, the Service Club of Manatee County, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and the Sarasota Bar Association. She also chaired the board of the previous Sarasota Family YMCA and served as a trustee of the YMCA Foundation of Sarasota.Oswald has used his architectural skills and licensed contractor’s knowledge to support Safe Children Coalition through thick and thin. He is involved in the upcoming Youth Shelter project, benefiting homeless youths in our community.

Giants in child welfare in our community, Bobbie and Floyd Price had a vision − along with other caring members of the community − to help large sibling groups of foster children in the 12th Circuit.

That vision has resulted in the on-campus Foster Family Homes in Palmetto which, in partnership with the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes – One More Child, has provided loving physical, emotional and spiritual care for hundreds of foster children ages up to 19.

Safe Children Coalition is the lead agency for community-based care for Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties, providing foster care, adoption, and prevention and diversion programs.

∎ Public relations, communications, nonprofit and associated professionals are invited to attend “Media-Con: Shoot for the Best Headline,” a morning of learning and networking with media representatives from across our region and beyond.

The event takes place Feb. 23, 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, 3130 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.

It is presented annually by the Central West Coast chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association and open to members and their guests.

Attendees will hear from numerous media representatives on topics including best practices for story pitching and content matter most appropriate and desired by their respective outlets.

Tickets are $50 for members for $60 for future members, including breakfast.

∎ The National Community Development Association presented the Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award to Blue Sky Communities and Community Assisted and Supported Living for their Fairlawn Village Community during NCDA’s Winter Conference in January.

Fairlawn Village is an affordable living development in the city of Orlando that targets families. It consists of 116 apartments.

The city of Orlando nominated Fairlawn Village for the Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award. The award is named in honor of Audrey Nelson, who was NCDA’s first deputy executive secretary.

Community Assisted and Supported Living, based in Sarasota, is a nonprofit organization that has provided permanent housing with case management services for adults with disabling conditions since 1998.

BCB Homes – Estate Management, of Naples, has earned accreditation from the National Home Watch Association for the fifth year.

The NHWA was formed in 2009 to establish and maintain the highest industry standards for home watch services throughout the United States and Canada.

CEO Joe Smallwood founded BCB Homes in 1993. In 2016, he created an Estate Management Division of the company, which includes home watch.

A Naples native, he graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s in civil engineering. He owned a commercial construction company before starting BCB Homes.

Aloha Home Watch Services, of Bradenton, has earned accreditation from the National Home Watch Association for the seventh year.

The NHWA was formed in 2009 to establish and maintain the highest industry standards for home watch services in the U.S. and Canada.

Aloha owner Bill Medred formerly was involved in public and private school education.

Aloha Home Watch Services accepts clients in Sarasota and Bradenton.
