Awards

Five contractors were recognized for workplace safety in 2022 in their respective employer categories. The awards were presented Jan. 27 by the Kansas Contractors Association in recognition of each company’s achievements in establishing a safe workplace and safe jobsites for their employees. Two Topeka businesses were honored.

• BRB Contractors of Topeka won Category I, which is comprised of companies that have total employee hours of exposure between 3,000 and 50,000 hours.

• Bettis Asphalt & Construction of Topeka won Category IV, which is comprised of companies that have total employee hours of exposure between 200,000 and 400,000 hours.

Lawton Nuss, former chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, has been named to an advisory committee to the national Veterans Justice Commission chaired by former U.S. defense secretary and U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel.  The commission is examining why so many military veterans land in jail and prison, and why almost one half of all veterans feel inadequately prepared for the transition from military to civilian life.  The commission will eventually make recommendations for policy changes to enhance safety, health and justice.

The Kansas Public Employees Retirement System Board of Trustees welcomed its newest trustee State Treasurer Steven Johnson, of Assaria. Johnson was sworn in Jan. 20. KPERS’ board is responsible for Trust Fund investment oversight, adopting actuarial assumptions, and hiring and monitoring the executive director and outside service providers, including investment managers and consultants. Johnson has more than 30 years of experience in financial and agricultural services. He is a farmer and most recently served as a representative in the Kansas Legislature for the 108th House District. He earned a bachelor of science in agricultural economics from Kansas State University and a master of business administration in finance from the University of Chicago.
