My name is Emma Skidmore and this summer, I am working at The Columbus Dispatch as the sole business news intern.

Next summer, I will graduate from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. I will also work as a senior writer this coming academic year on OU’s independent, student-run publication, The Post.

Why I became a journalist

I became a journalist because the job combines all of the things I love doing: writing, learning new things, meeting new people and traveling.

What I like best about my job

My favorite thing about the job is hearing everyone's stories and learning about niche topics. I love that business reporting combines both news and feature-writing elements.

A story I have worked on that has had a lasting impact on me

A story that had a lasting impact on me was one about working mothers navigating the shortage of child care employees and rising daycare costs during the pandemic. I felt I had a responsibility to communicate the gravity of their situation to readers who may not be able to relate to their struggles.

What is the biggest challenge I face

The biggest challenge I face is overcoming nerves when interviewing new people, but it always works out OK!

What I like to do when I'm not working

When I’m not working, I love to dance. I have been dancing for 18 years, and it’s a great workout.

Favorite Columbus-area tradition

I don't have a favorite tradition in the Columbus area yet because it's my first time in the city, but my favorite event in Ohio is the annual Pawpaw Festival in Athens during the summer.

Why journalism matters

Journalism matters because it helps give a voice to those who don't have one on the community, state, national and global level.
