Business openings and closings in El Paso area: Earl of Sandwich to open Friday

El Paso will get its first Earl of Sandwich franchise Friday on the East Side.

It will have its grand opening at 3 p.m. at 3581 Zaragoza Road, Suite 207. The first 20 customers who arrive for the ribbon-cutting will receive a $10 gift card that can be used at a later date.

“There’s a storied history behind this sandwich restaurant and I’m proud to bring it to the Sun City,” owner Kenji Shigematsu said in a news release.

The menu features hot sandwiches, hand-tossed salads, wraps, pizza breads, soups and more.

Shigematsu also owns Tin Man Filling Station, a Texas craft beer growler filling station on the East Side.

New Peachwave yogurt truck to come to Downtown El Paso

A Peachwave of El Paso frozen yogurt and gelato mobile shop is set to open across from Southwest University Stadium in Downtown. It should be a great location for those going to a game or the museums.

The yogurt truck will be next to Vitola’s Cigar Bar, 216 E. Franklin Ave., and the estimated opening time frame is mid-September. There is a Peachwave shop on the East Side that opened in November 2021, for those who want to get an idea of what's to come, at 3581 N. Zaragoza Road, Suite 105.

Chick 'N Cone takes dip in far Northwest El Paso

The new twist on fried chicken, Chick 'N Cone, came and went. The franchise opened in July 2021 at the Canyons at Cimarron, 7460 Cimarron Market Ave.

However, the place has since closed. It appears it's now a Boozy Ice Cream. Not sure if they are operated by the same owner, but there is one already in the Cincinnati District, at 2623 N. Stanton St. You can select your own flavors (with or without booze) or choose one of their existing combinations, such as Mangoneada or Bourbon Pecan.

The place seems to be a fun meet-up spot for the young university crowd, playing music and serving shots in cups made out of a cookie.

Socorro area in Lower Valley to get Black Fridays

Bargain shoppers in the Lower Valley and Socorro area, rejoice! The former Walgreens at the corner of the César E. Chávez Border Highway and Alameda Avenue that has been closed for some time is getting new life as a Black Fridays store.

The banner has only been up a short while, so stay tuned for opening updates. It's also close to the Zaragoza port of entry, so it should be a popular spot for Juarenses looking for gadgets at good prices. The franchise is known for offering deals from $1 to $15, depending on the day of the week. On Thursdays, it's closed for restocking.

We already had reported a store with a similar concept and name, but in Spanish: El Remata is coming to North Yarbrough.

Former Lower Valley Kmart now Economy Wholesale Grocers

Have you stopped by the new Economy Wholesale Grocers, where a former Kmart store used to be, at 411 N. Zaragoza Road in the Lower Valley?

Economy Wholesale Grocers used to be called Economy Cash & Carry and has been locally owned since 1958, according to the store's website.

Shoppers can buy by the can or case and customers don't need a membership, unlike other wholesale stores in El Paso. They carry items including bread and pastries, meat, vegetables, desserts, and cleaning and pet products.

Furr's torn down to make space for new restaurant

Looks like the owners of the Bubba's 33 wanted their own new building. The Furr's location in the Las Palmas Marketplace at 11925 Gateway West has officially been torn down.

All that's left is our dreams of getting seconds of mashed potatoes and hot rolls!
