BUSINESS PEOPLE: Retired Army officer joins Mote Marine board

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Frances Presley Rice has joined the board of trustees of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium.

Rice served in the Army for 20 years, retiring as a lawyer with the Judge Advocate General. Subsequently, she worked for the McDonnell Douglas Corp. as a government contract adviser on the law of space exploration.

Mote’s board of trustees supports the lab in its mission of advancing marine science, education and outreach. This support includes guiding strategic lab-wide initiatives and serving as a pillar to the creation of the new Mote Science Education Aquarium.

John Burgess, a partner at Shumaker law firm, has been named executive chair for the 2022 Sarasota Walk to End Alzheimer’s. He has volunteered his time to the walk for three years.

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease.

Burgess is a partner in Shumaker’s Labor, Employment and Benefits Service Line. Focused on employee benefits, executive compensation and employee stock ownership plans, he is a certified public accountant with an extensive tax and accounting background, which includes experience as an auditor with a large accounting firm.

Dr. Eric Schaible, MD, has retired from Community Eye Center, in Port Charlotte.

He was the eye research director and provided ophthalmic care for the past 28 years, specializing in complex cataract surgery, trauma, premium lens implants and treatment of astigmatism.

Besides publishing numerous papers on neurosurgery and ophthalmology, Schaible conducted research on laser cataract surgery and was a member in eight affiliations, including the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Eric Liss will be handling patient appointments. Liss, born and raised in Sarasota, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who will provide comprehensive ophthalmic care.

He has a special interest in advanced cataract surgery, macular degeneration and inflammatory disorders of the eye.

Community Eye Center is among 29 locations and five surgery centers under Quigley Eye Specialists umbrella throughout South Florida.
