“I have tried my best to ignore the vicious rumors about my involvement in Stephen Smith’s tragic death that continue to be published in the media as I grieve over the brutal murders of my mother and brother,” Murdaugh said. “Before, during and since my father’s trial, I have been targeted and harassed by the media and followers of this story.”

Stephen Smith’s body was in the middle of a South Carolina road in 2015. His cause of death at the time was determined that he died from a hit-and-run. To this day, no arrests have been made in the case.

In 2021, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, or SLED, announced they were reopening the case based on information gathered during the murder investigations into the deaths of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.

Murdaugh said he waited to speak out due to wanting to cope with his father’s incarceration and the deaths of his mother and brother.

“These baseless rumors of my involvement with Stephen and his death are false,” I unequivocally deny any involvement in his death, and my heart goes out to the Smith family. I am requesting that the media immediately stop publishing these defamatory comments and rumors about me.”

Law enforcement officials are set to reopen the investigation into Smith’s death and will exhume his body soon. However, the timeline for the investigation is unknown.
