Busy Cape Coral artist finds time for colorful wildlife, nature creations

A seasonal Cape Coral resident, or snowbird, usually applies to someone spending part or all of winter here, from January through spring. Most of them are enjoying retirement. None of this applies to Girard Moravcik.

Since 2016, he has been going back and forth from Sharon Center, Ohio (between Cleveland and Akron), to the Cape for a month at a time almost every other month. He keeps running his custom design and printing company Carey Color Inc. and has, especially in the last two years, also applied his work skills into creating his own line of popular and acclaimed art in his home.

Summing up his traveling and how busy he is, he calls himself a “fruit loop bird”!

Starting out as a photographer and with 40 years of experience in the printing industry — including teaching laser scanner operators — Moravicik produces unique, colorful and highly impressionistic metallic prints in the form of indoor and outdoor clocks and pieces to adorn walls under the banner Colorful Creations by GJM.

Along with sports and military images, most of his pieces are of animals put into color-bursting fantasy scenes. He first works indoors in a spare bedroom using a computer to “add light and shadow to give the original image maximum density and dimension” and then prints it onto metal. He then takes it to his garage and “tests various imaging platforms and retouches some of the colors” with a heat processor and other equipment, often ending up with a captivating, three-dimensional look. He also customizes pieces per specific customer requests.

Moravcik takes his works out into the community as well. He produced wildlife license plates for last year’s Burrowing Owl Festival and was poised to showcase some of his works at last month’s edition, but had to return home just prior to it for his wife’s elbow surgery. He was named the Best Digital Artist at the 2022 Cape Coral Art Festival and Marketplace and was a judge at the recent 2023 edition. He displayed at the Naples Seafood and Music Festival on Feb. 3-5 and will also do so at the Fort Myers Seafood and Music Festival in the River District from March 24-26.

His passion for the outdoors is mainly an outgrowth of his love of fishing which he enjoys in our area as well.

“It’s always been a big part of my life," Moravcik said. "Seeing dolphins, sea turtles, birds and more while out on the water is so great.”

Eagles, hummingbirds, pelicans, butterflies, egrets and burrowing owls are some of his favorite winged subjects.

“I really enjoy combining my photos and others that I purchase into creating unique compositions including some three-dimensional and surreal effects,” he said.
