Busy part of Newbury Street shutdown after water main break causes significant flooding

A busy stretch of Newbury Street is expected to remain shut down to traffic through some of Monday morning after a water main break caused a major mess.

The Boston Fire Department said the pipe ruptured in the area of 337 Newbury Street, near Diesel, just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.

It sent thousands of gallons of water gushing onto Newbury Street near Mass Ave down to Gloucester Street for over an hour.

Most of that water had receded by 9 p.m. after crews turned the water off.

“I just moved in. It seems pretty crazy. I was in my apartment, and I saw all the commotion so I came outside to take a look,” said Ned Stabnick, who lives on Newbury Street.

A portion of the sidewalk and street buckled near the spot where the pipe burst.

Boston Public Works is also assessing a light pole that was compromised.

Boston Water and Sewer crews are now in the process of digging up the street to repair the pipe that led to the mess.

In the meantime, Newbury Street will remain closed to traffic from Hereford Street to Mass Ave.

Boston 25 News observed some flooded patios but did not see any damage to businesses as a result of the flooded roadway.

A Boston Fire Department spokesperson said some of the businesses were closed when it happened so crews were not able to assess every property.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
