Busy PHS student hopes to use Homecoming title as platform
Oct. 23—Permian High School senior Hannah Douglas is a busy young woman.
Douglas, who is the Homecoming Queen, is involved in many school activities — drum major for the band, in choir, vice president of the choir council and a vocalist in Black Magic, the pop ensemble.
Douglas, 17, has been in band since seventh grade and said her "real instrument" is percussion," but she's enjoying the drum major role.
She was formerly involved in theater and at the time of this interview was ranked No. 1 at PHS.
Being named Homecoming Queen was "super cool."
"I know that Homecoming is a silly, random title, so I plan to do something more with it; something that means something," Douglas said.
She hopes to use her platform for something such as raising awareness about gun violence in schools. If this is a tradition she could start, Douglas said it would be really cool.
Douglas is undecided about where she's going to college, but wants to study social sciences and go to law school.
Even with all the activities she juggles, Douglas seems to take it in stride.
"I think it's a lot of determination; a lot of sacrifice ... I know my priorities, things like my schoolwork and how well my organizations do are the top of my priorities. ...," Douglas said.
She is still a normal high school student, so things like hanging out with her friends and having a balanced schedule are important.
She has an older sister, Halie Douglas, 20, who attended Permian. Her parents are Jennifer and Gary Douglas.
"She was also extremely bright," Douglas said of her sister. "She finished number seven in her class. We always say that we split all the fine arts in the family because at one point in time we've done all six fine arts, so I was band, choir, theater. She was orchestra, dance and art ...," Douglas said.
Hannah said she wouldn't be able to do everything she does without Halie as a role model.
She said her whole family is extremely supportive. Douglas is able to spend all her time on school and doesn't have to work.
"... I've been given that opportunity, so I can succeed further in life. I understand that so much of what I am is owed to them," she said.
Permian Principal Delesa Styles said Douglas is often recognized because she is multi-talented.
"But I would also like to add that she is a genuinely kind person. We are fortunate to have her as a student at Permian, as she is a true leader and impressively represents our school through many platforms," Styles said in an email.
