A busy Saturday ahead: Amarillo offers music, muscle cars, magic and more

With summer almost at an end and school starting just around the corner, the Amarillo area offers a weekend full of events that the whole family can enjoy. Each of the following are just a few of the events being offered this Saturday, July 29.

Comanche Moon Concert

Kicking off the list is the Comanche Moon Concert, benefitting the Family Care Foundation, at Starlight Ranch, located at 1415 Sunrise Dr #4300.

Gates open at 6 p.m. for the fundraiser, and the opening band, Scrambled Eggs, will start playing at 7:30 p.m., followed by headliners Comanche Moon playing hits from their multiple albums.

The headlining band includes principal artists Chandler Sidwell and Mark Erickson, who both come from a multi-generation Panhandle rancher stock, underpinning their music with rugged country roots, and stories of agrarian struggles.

Funds raised from the event will benefit the Family Care Foundation, a nonprofit that works to provide healthcare needs to individuals throughout the Texas Panhandle. Funds from this concert will help the organization to continue to help individuals seeking assistance with inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient procedures, prescription drugs, IV therapy, eye glasses, hearing aids, dental services, wheelchairs, shower stools, and tub rails.

Community Outreach event

This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Amarillo Public Health Department will host a Community Outreach Event: Impacting the City at Sam Houston Park, located at 4101 Line Ave.

According to the City of Amarillo, the goal of this event is to offer resources for families as they prepare for back to school in an effort to provide a different approach from other organizations providing hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, hair grooming items, dental hygiene items, and other needed products.

The event will include more than 20 vendors sharing information and giving away various school supplies. Live music will be provided by a DJ during the event, and children are invited to say hello and get photos with a special guest from the North Pole.

Additional day care items will also be given away, including diapers, Pullups, wipes, detergent and 50 Kinder mats.

In preparation for back to school, Amarillo Public Health will be on site to provide low-cost vaccines for adults and children. Children's immunizations records will be required on-site. Non-insured children or individuals with Medicaid will be required to pay $13.75 for more than two vaccines.

Hot Blooded Run

Get Fit is hosting its annual Hot Blooded 1 mile, 5k, and 10k race benefitting The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at GetFit, located at 1911 S Georgia St.

The annual run/walk will benefit The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center, which works with local law enforcement to provide interviews and examinations for area children suffering from child abuse and neglect, preventing the child from having to relive their abuse.

The event will include a 1 mile run/ walk, 5k run/walk, 10k run, and a virtual run. Race day entry will not be allowed. Awards will be given for overall, masters including more than 50 winners, and age group winners for races 5K and 10K only. The first 200 people to register will receive a complementary shirt.

Packet pickup will be held Friday, July 28 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the GitFit office. Race entry prices increase by $5 on packet pickup day.

50 for 50 run/walk

As previously reported by the Globe-News, Turner Fitness will host its 4th annual 50 for 50 run/walk, benefitting the American Cancer Society (ACS), Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Bones Hooks Park.

This year, the organization is hoping to raise $50,000 for ACS. Registration will he held prior to the run/walk.

According to Turner Fitness CEO Marcell Turner, the event has additional meaning this year as he will be turning 50, and the event fundraises for different organizations and nonprofits each year. The event is open and free to the public, but they are accepting donations.

Unity in the Community Water Bash

Shi Lee's Barbecue & Soul Food Cafe will host its annual citywide water bash at Bones Hooks Park at noon Saturday.

The event will begin at noon until supplies last. The last hurrah of summer features a fun-filled day at the park with water toys for kids to enjoy, but it is also a chance for families to register for an upcoming backpack giveaway before kids head back to school for the upcoming school year.

Harley Party

Family Support Services hosts its 28th annual Harley Party this Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Amarillo National Center located at the Amarillo Fairgrounds, 3301 SE 10th Ave.

This year's fundraiser will feature a 2023 Harley Davidson Breakout 117 valued at $23,149, or $15,000 Visa Gift Card. Admission tickets allow for two individuals to attend and includes food and beverage, and grants one submission for the grand prize.

Tickets can be purchased at Tripp's Harley Davidson while supplies last.

Chalk It Up

Amarillo College is proud to bring back their annual Chalk It Up event Saturday at the Washington Street Campus Oeschger Mall, pending weather. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and will include approximately 40 artists and teams depicting several chalk illusions and artworks.

At 11 a.m., artists will stop drawing and awards will be announced. This event is free and open to the public.

Harry Potter birthday celebration

Amarillo Parks and Recreation hosts a celebrations including magic and wizardry with their Harry Potter Birthday Celebration on Saturday at John Stiff Park, 4800 Bell St., from 3 to 5 p.m.

The event will include Fantastic Beasts provided by the Amarillo Zoo, complementary butter beer, crafts, a herbology class, bounce house and more.

This event is free and open to the public, and pets are invited.

Wizarding School

The Don Harington Discovery Center hosts their annual Wizarding School event with two sessions, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday. During the event, attendees can experience real magic as science and wonder collide.

The event will include mystical demonstrations, magical creatures and classes teaching herbology, charms, astronomy, and more.

Available time slots to visit Wizarding School are 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Butter beer and t-shirts are not included in the admissions fees. Admission for this event is $5 per person for members and $8 for non-members. Tickets are still available, but space is limited. Pedigo to perform at Amarillo College, reception at AMoA

In conjunction with the release of his sixth studio album, Hayden Pedigo will perform in his native Amarillo at 7:30 p.m. July 29. The 28-year-old performance artist, politician, model and fingerstyling maestro will take the stage at the Amarillo College Concert Hall Theater, adjacent to the Amarillo Museum of Art, followed by a cocktail reception at AMoA.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased in advance at amoa.org/pedigo

Pedigo was homeschooled in Amarillo by his truck-stop preacher father, ran for Amarillo City Council in 2019 (as documented by Jasmine Stodel’s SXSW-premiering, PBS-acquired film "Kid Candidate"), and struck up penfriendships and collaborative partnerships with the likes of Terry Allen, Charles Hayward (This Heat), Werner “Zappi” Diermaier (Faust), and Tim Heidecker.

The post-concert cocktail reception at AMoA will be held on the Museum’s third floor, where attendees can view an exhibition of artworks by the iconic musician and multi-media artist, Terry Allen. The Amarillo Museum of Art is located at 2200 S. Van Buren on the Washington Street campus of Amarillo College.

After a busy Saturday, the fun continues over the weekend with a car show and concert fundraiser on Sunday.

Sunday event: La Mission Christian Carshow

This Sunday from noon to midnight, Nueva Vida Car Club presents the 8th annual La Mission Christian Carshow and Concert at the Amarillo Civic Center.

Proceeds from the event, the biggest indoor Christian car show in Texas, will benefit the Amarillo League House, who work to provide lodging for family members during medical treatment.

During the event, live performances of Christian Hip Hop and Spanish music will be performed by various artist. The event will include various vendors, a variety of vehicles, motorcycles and bike entries. Awards will be announced during the event for each category.

Admission is $10 for adults, children ages 12 and younger have free admission. Guests are advised to enter through entrance #2.
