Emergency financial assistance and food pantries

Financial assistance is available through LUM for family emergencies such as paying utilities, rent/mortgage, prescription medication, physical exam fees and GED test fees.

According to the financial assistance page on LUM's website, typically $70 or less is given through the aid, but decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. There is also a total amount allowed per household per year, according to the website.

Financial assistance cannot be given more than every 30 days, until the household's annual limit is reached. LUM can also offer referrals to other assistance programs.

Funds are not allowed for doctors' bills car repairs, gasoline for cars, bus tokens, court or legal fees, bills not yet past due or bills too large.

To inquire about medical assistance in-person, visit the LUM office Monday-Friday at 8:15 a.m. Priority will be given to in-person rather than online requests. Online requests can be made through the LUM website.

Additionally, all required documents must be emailed to gsp@LUMserve.org. After all documentation has been submitted, LUM staff will email or call to follow up. Only Tippecanoe County residents are eligible for LUM's financial assistance. Those up to 175% of federal poverty guidelines are eligible.

Read more online to learn about required documents for financial assistance.

LUM also offers food assistance twice a week for individuals and families from Tippecanoe County.

To qualify for LUM's foo assistance, you must be an adult of at least 18 years of age, live in Tippecanoe County and be able to show proof of residency, not be sick and show up in person on Thursdays and/or Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Food items such as proteins, produce and paper products - depending on availability - are available at the pantry. The pantry is located at St. John's Episcopal Church, 6th Street between North and Ferry streets, in Lafayette. Enter through the red door under the green awning.

A second food pantry is also available from 10 a.m. to noon on Fridays at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 333 Meridian Street in West Lafayette.
