Butler basketball gets its point guard with St. John's transfer Posh Alexander

Butler basketball's complete roster makeover is apparently finished with former St. John's guard Posh Alexander committing to the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

Alexander's commitment gives Butler a full 13 scholarship players for the 2023-24 season. Another transfer or de-commitment could change the scholarship number, but for now Butler's roster is set.

Alexander played three seasons for the Red Storm and has two years of eligibility remaining. Last season, the 6-foot guard averaged 10 points, 4.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 30 games. The Brooklyn native shot 23% from 3 last season and is a 25% 3-point shooter for his career.

Alexander brings physicality and tough on-ball defense to the guard position. In 2020-21, Alexander was voted Big East Freshman of the Year, Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year and earned a unanimous Big East All-Freshman team selection. He led the Big East in steals twice and finished 11th nationally with 2.3 steals per game last season.

Alexander is the sixth transfer to join the program this offseason along with Pierre Brooks II (Michigan State), Jahmyl Telfort (Northeastern), Andre Screen (Bucknell), Landon Moore (St. Francis, Pa.) and D.J. Davis (UC-Irvine).

Butler added three freshmen: guard Finley Bizjack, center Boden Kapke and forward Augusto Cassia, and have four returning players in John-Michael Mulloy, D.J. Hughes, Jalen Thomas and Connor Turnbull. Alexander should fill the point guard spot vacated by Eric Hunter Jr.

Alexander, Moore, Brooks, Davis and Bizjack form a backcourt group with varying skills.

Alexander gives the Dawgs a floor general and playmaker. Moore is a combo guard capable of scoring and distributing. Brooks is a big guard who can play small forward and defend positions one through four. Bizjack is a talented shooter who can handle the ball. Davis is another sharpshooter who could work well off the ball with Alexander at the point.

Molding a roster with nine newcomers is quite the challenge and something rarely if ever seen at Butler. It's too early to project a starting lineup, but it would appear Hughes and Mulloy will struggle to receive consistent playing time. That leaves 11 other players battling for minutes. Butler coach Thad Matta regularly keeps a fairly short rotation, meaning some newcomers could fall out of the rotation.

Constant roster turnover is the way of today's college basketball landscape. A roster reset was needed for Matta to build the team in his image, but continuous change — especially at a school like Butler that struggles to compete with the NIL powerhouses — doesn't seem to be the formula for long-term success. A successful 2023-24 season could reverse that narrative. Or the program could be forced to hit the reset button, again.
