Would you buy $1,400 overalls — with fake grass stains? Gucci is selling some

Designers have created strange items in the name of fashion.

Moschino once released a clear dress that looked like a plastic dry-cleaning bag. Balenciaga made a blue purse that many likened to an Ikea bag. And don’t forget the $1,000 sterling silver “tin can” sold by Tiffany & Co.

Now, there’s a new (and expensive) garment raising eyebrows — and it looks like something you may already have in your closet.

Gucci is selling overalls with fake grass stains on the legs for a cool $1,400.

The luxury brand’s “eco washed organic denim overall” is made from organic cotton “specifically treated for a stained-like, distressed effect,” according to the description. Gucci said it was aiming for what it calls a “grunge vibe.”

“Gucci explores new takes on the cult fabric, reinterpreting it with different designs and washing techniques that blur the line between vintage and contemporary,” the description said.

The overalls may look like your favorite piece of work denim, all faded blue with strong grass stains near the bottom of the legs, but they bear one major difference: a Gucci label sewn into the back pocket.

As images of the overalls spread, people on social media seemed a bit perplexed.

“My farmer grandpa is at the height of fashion and doesn’t even know it,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Now everyone can go around looking like (they) mowed their yard,” wrote another.

“Since when ‘grass stain effect’ has become so valuable?” wrote a third, to which another person responded: “Since a shutdown that limits the time you can spend outdoors.”

I hate capitalism,” another wrote.

If the overalls aren’t quite your cup of tea, Gucci is also selling a pair of grass-stained jeans in the United Kingdom for about $770.
