Buzzing Cicadas Cover Tree Outside Washington
A resident of Ashburn, Virginia, discovered a tree in her neighborhood covered with buzzing Brood X cicadas on June 5, as the insects emerged in the eastern United States.
Cicada broods come out in pockets each year in the central, southeast, and northeastern US, Timshel Purdum, a bug expert at the Science Museum of Virginia, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Brood X emerges every 13 or 17 years.
Purdum said the male cicadas make their sound in an attempt to attract a mate.
