An eight-hour standoff at a parking garage at BWI Marshall Airport ended after a man being sought by police died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

After a “be on the lookout” was issued for the man following a domestic incident in Howard County, Maryland Transportation Authority Police say they located him in the daily garage around 10:50 a.m. He had a firearm.

The transportation authority police said they established a perimeter and police negotiators spoke with the man attempting to peacefully resolve the incident.

BWI officials, who did not respond to repeated requests for comment, tweeted around 12:10 p.m. that the daily garage had been shut down due to unspecified police activity and that there was no threat to the public, and tweeted updates regarding what people parked in the garage should do.

At about 6:40 pm, police say officers heard the sound of gunfire come from the suspect’s vehicle and approached to find the man with a gunshot wound.

BWI Fire Department medics, who were already on the scene, attempted to render aid. A short time later, the subject was pronounced deceased. He was not identified.

Howard County police confirmed the suspect was being sought in connection with an incident that occurred in Hanover. Seth Hoffman, a county police spokesman, said a victim was evaluated at a hospital and released.

Hoffman said with the suspect’s death, the county’s investigation into the domestic matter was “concluded” but did not provide additional details.
