Both are running as Democrats.

According to the news release announcing his re-election candidacy, Byers has more than 26 years of prosecutorial experience having prosecuted criminal cases in Gallup, Albuquerque, Deming and Las Cruces in New Mexico and in Amarillo and Del Rio in Texas.

Byers is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served as naval officer at sea and ashore for 11 years.

He received his juris doctor degree from the University of New Mexico.

Byers’ re-election announcement trumpeted his 26 years as a prosecutor in New Mexico and Texas, his experience supporting crime victims and survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic and his ability to navigate court closures during the pandemic and changing state laws.

“Byers has been actively advocating for strengthening New Mexico criminal laws with the New Mexico Legislature. He has also worked at improving internal processes and investing in new case management software solutions for more efficient case management,” according to the news release.

“Building relationships with community organizations and law-enforcement agencies ensures that the responsibility to public service is done with integrity and fairness.” Byers said.

“While our systemic challenges have continued to escalate, we have overcome many; I am determined to continue to overcome them, for the sake of our victims, and this community, which I have chosen as my own,” Byers continued.

Byers added: “I take the responsibility of public service quite seriously, and I’m committed to serving those who come in contact with our criminal justice system with impeccable integrity, honor, and tenacity.”
