Byrd wins, Hatchets 5th at PAC

Jan. 23—The Washington Hatchet wrestling team took fifth in the PAC Championship Meet on Saturday. The Hatchets had one champion and two third place finishes.

Brady Byrd (29-1), a junior at 106 lbs earned his second PAC title. He won all four of his matches, including a tech fall over MaKenize Smith (Heritage Hills) 31-4 (TF-1.5 4:25 (16-0).

The third-place winners included, Jackson Whitehead (22-5) at 138 who placed third and scored 12.5 team points. Heavyweight Ruben Gutierrez (25-8) placed third and scored 15.0 team points.

Fifth and sixth place winners included Cameron Cook (20-12) who placed 5th and scored 10.0 team points at 170 lbs, Righley Purdue (22-15) also placed fifth and scored 12.0 team points at 132.

Diego Mora-Lopez (17-13) placed 6th and scored 10.0 team points, while Eli Jenne (20-17) also placed 6th and scored 9.0 team points.

Hunter Hanson (145 lbs.) was the final Hatchet earning points with a seventh place finish. Also wrestling was Holden McCarthy, Oliver Roe and Carter Tolbert. WHS had three wrestlers who did not wrestle due to illness.

Heritage Hills was the overall winner, followed by Tell City, Southridge and North Posey and Washington in fifth, an improvement from 11th last year for WHS.

Sectional at Castle will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and tickets are $7.
