Byrd 25, Captain Shreve 20: There’s nothing like perfection, and Byrd quarterback Lake Lambert can live the rest of his life knowing he was perfect in three tries against Captain Shreve.

The senior quarterback improved his record as a starter to 21-2, leading the Jackets (4-0) to a victory over the Gators on a steamy night. Although the finish was exciting with the Byrd defense stopping a late drive by the Gators (3-1) that could have won the game, it was a contestant for the ugliest matchup in a series that started in 1967.

The teams were whistled for a combined 23 penalties for 269 yards.

“Penalties and turnovers are the mistakes we made that we need to clean up,” Byrd coach Stacy Ballew said.

The Jackets got early touchdowns from Lake Lambert on a 1-yard run and from Jackson Dufrene on a 44-yard reception from Lambert. Miami commitment Abram Murray kicked a 49-yard field goal for a 17-0 Byrd lead at halftime. The Gators rallied in the second half, with Kenyon Terrell passing to Texas Tech commitment Marquez Stevenson for consecutive scores to get within 17-12. But Byrd’s Devon Strickland scored on an 8-yard run and a two-point conversion with 2:12 to play to seal the win.

Shreve coach Adam Kirby knew his team was close enough to taste the win without being able to pull it off.

“I told the team you can be proud of the effort and not proud of the outcome,” Kirby said. “We’re young and we have to learn to overcome some adversity. We can’t wait to get busted in the mouth to answer the bell.”

Huntington 28, Northwood 20: The Raiders (2-2) opened District 1-4A play with a big win on the road against the Falcons (2-2). Kaleb Tucker scored on passes of 34 and 80 yards from Kam Evans and rushed for a 32-yard touchdown. Quintavion White scored on runs of 1, 6 and 13 yards for the Falcons.
