Bystander jumps into Nashua River to rescue person

Jun. 24—A bystander jumped into the Nashua River on Saturday to rescue a woman who had jumped from the Main Street Bridge in downtown Nashua.

Nashua Fire Rescue got the report at 2:13 p.m. and upon arriving found that the bystander had stabilized the 41-year-old woman in the middle of the river and assisted the subject to a small shelf on the side of the Nashua Telegraph Building.

A Nashua police officer who arrived on the scene then threw a flotation device to the pair.

Nashua Fire Rescue personnel said the two appeared fatigued and were in obvious need of assistance out of the water. Ladder Co. 1 lowered a ground ladder from an elevated edge about 30 feet east of where the two subjects were. Two firefighters wearing water rescue suits entered the water and reached the two people.

Both were secured to floatation devices and ropes while initial medical evaluation was conducted in the water by rescuers. The two subjects were loaded onto Nashua Fire Rescue boats and brought to a boat ramp for further evaluation.

Both people were transported to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center.
