ALLENDALE TWP. — A group of bystanders rescued an elderly man after the vehicle he was driving went into a pond Friday afternoon in Allendale Township, according the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Several agencies were dispatched at 12:38 p.m. Friday, March 24, to reports of a vehicle that went into a pond in the area of 60th Avenue and Warner Street in Allendale Township.

When police and fire units arrived on-scene, bystanders had pulled the driver out of the vehicle and onto shore using a neighbor’s rowboat.

Preliminary investigation showed the 83-year-old Coopersville man was driving north on 60th Avenue when his vehicle went off the road and through a nearby field before going into the pond.

Life EMS Ambulance transported the driver to a local hospital where he was in stable condition, per OCSO.

OCSO and its dive team were assisted on-scene by the Grand Haven Township Fire Department and Robinson Township Fire Department.
