BYU AD announces extension for Kalani Sitake in locker room celebration (Video)
BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe had a unique way of telling the football team about a new contract extension for Cougars head coach Kalani Sitake.
After BYU clinched a bowl berth with a win over Idaho State on Saturday, Holmoe addressed the team in the locker room.
“Hey, I got something to say. This is your coach, right?” Holmoe said, putting his hand on Sitake’s shoulder. “He’s my coach, and he’s our coach.”
At that point, Holmoe unzipped his jacket, revealing a T-shirt that said #EXTENDKALANI. The team went nuts.

On Monday morning, the three-year extension became official. Sitake’s contract now goes through the 2023 season.
“We are pleased to announce a contract extension for Kalani,” Holmoe said. “We believe in him and the direction of the program. Together we are committed to creating a bright future for BYU football.”
Added Sitake: “I truly appreciate the continued support that Tom Holmoe, President [Kevin J.] Worthen and the BYU administration have for our program. I love our players, coaches and fans and I’m excited about the future of BYU football.”
Saturday’s win marked the fourth straight for the Cougars, who are now 6-4 on the year. That mark includes wins over USC and then-undefeated Boise State. BYU will round out its regular season schedule with road games at UMass and San Diego State. From there, the Cougars will play in the Hawaii Bowl. The school announced that it had accepted an invitation from the bowl on Saturday.
Sitake, in his fourth season at BYU, has a 9-4 record as head coach. If the Cougars win their final three games, they would match the best record they have had during Sitake’s tenure. BYU went 9-4 in 2016 before going 4-9 in 2017 and 7-6 in 2018.
