C Spire expands internet infrastructure across Montgomery

A telecommunications company expanded its internet access in Montgomery, which leaders said will push the city toward becoming a technology hub.

C Spire has created fiber availability in nearly 2,000 homes and more than 400 businesses in the Montgomery area. The company is working to install fiber to reach nearly 3,000 homes in its next phase, according to a news release.

“As we look at how Montgomery really wants to grow and our technology perspective and how we’re looking at innovation and entrepreneurship companies like C Spire are integral to that growth," said Charisse Stokes, the executive director for TechMGM.

C Spire bought Troy Cablevision in 2021, which helped the company expand throughout the state.

“C Spire is an investment in Montgomery, a welcome investment, and I have to say what a tremendous additional milestone this is in our economic development path forward," said Anna Buckalew, the president and CEO of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.

Troy Cablevision built its first fiber in Montgomery in 2013, according to a news release. It was the first internet service provider to become affiliated with the Montgomery Internet Exchange, a collaboration between Montgomery County, the city and Maxwell Air Force Base.

"C Spire is amid a three-year, $500 million investment in fiber infrastructure and network development in Alabama to provide ultra-fast broadband internet access for consumers and other advanced voice and data services to businesses," according to a news release. "This initiative, announced in January of 2021, is part of a $1 billion investment across Alabama and Mississippi – the largest capital spends in the firm’s history."

Mayor Steven Reed appointed Octavius Jackson, a business consultant with O. Maynard Jackson & Associates LLC, as the liaison for this project.
