C-USA reportedly keeping full conference schedule. Here’s what it means for FAU
It looks like FAU has some clarity for its 2020 football schedule.
Conference USA plans on keeping its eight-game conference schedule while allowing schools to play non-conference games for the 2020 season, according to a Stadium report. The report also stated, “it could be possible for C-USA teams to play each other as ‘nonconference’ opponents if schools need more games.”
C-USA hasn’t made an announcement for its plans for the 2020 football season.
Stadium’s report comes as conferences around the country have been altering their football schedules due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Thursday, the SEC joined the Big Ten and Pac-12 as Power Five conferences going with a conference-only football schedule for the 2020 season. The Miami Hurricanes have an 11-game slate scheduled for the 2020 season, with 10 being against conference opponents and one non-conference game, as part of the ACC’s plan.
The Owls have lost two games from their 2020 season due to other conferences changing their members’ school schedules. FAU’s previously scheduled season-opener at Minnesota on Sept. 3 was canceled after the Big Ten’s decision to move to a conference-only schedule in early July.
The Owls’ second opponent of the season — Stony Brook — is in the Colonial Athletic Association, which announced July 17 it was suspending athletic competition in the fall.
No changes have been made to FAU’s other two non-conference games, with the Owls scheduled to start the 2020 season against Georgia Southern of the Sun Belt Conference on Sept. 19 in Statesboro, Ga., before matching up versus USF of the American Athletic Conference on Sept. 26 at FAU Stadium.
South Alabama athletic director Joel Erdmann said that Sun Belt athletic directors were going to meet Friday morning to discuss scheduling options, according to AL.com.
FAU is scheduled to open conference play versus Charlotte on Oct. 3. The remainder of the Owls’ scheduled 2020 season has FAU facing off against Southern Miss Oct. 10 on the road; Marshall in an away game Oct. 24; UTSA Oct. 31 and Western Kentucky Nov. 7 at FAU Stadium; FIU in the Shula Bowl Nov. 14 in Miami; hosting Old Dominion Nov. 21; and concluding the regular season on the road against Middle Tennessee Nov. 28.
