  • A GM spokesperson confirmed to C/D that the Chevrolet C8 Corvette will appear in Plymouth, Michigan, at the Concours d'Elegance of America event.

  • The appearance is part of a public seminar featuring GM design chief Michael Simcoe to be held on Saturday, July 27.

  • Classic cars from Ferrari, Bentley, and Cadillac, among many other marques, will be in abundance at the annual event.

General Motors vice president for global design Michael Simcoe will present a public seminar discussing the design challenges and processes behind development of the next-generation C8 Chevy Corvette on Saturday, July 27, in one of many events surrounding the 2019 Concours d'Elegance of America in suburban Detroit. The mid-engined sports car is being revealed in California on July 18, and this event is likely to be the first opportunity for the public to see the new Corvette. Also at the seminar will be other GM execs and designers, including former Corvette design chief Tom Peters.

Saturday seminars will also include another about Ferrari F1 racing moderated by F1 Mavericks author George Levy, both included in the price of the $65-a-plate luncheon, sure to be a highlight for attendees at the annual concours at the Inn at St. Johns in Plymouth, Michigan. There will be many other events in the runup to the Sunday concours itself, which will feature a wide array of machinery in classic and modern categories, and is widely acknowledged as one of the top three in the country.

Also prominently displayed in the competition will be Rolls-Royce motorcars, six V-16 Cadillacs owned by collector of the year John Groendyke, and a circle devoted to the history of alternative powerplants including electric, turbine, and steam cars.

Fans of modern collectibles won't be left out, as that class includes a dozen examples ranging from a 1971 Datsun 240Z to a 2001 Dodge Viper GTS ACR. Other activities include an open Cars and Coffee event that drew 800 to 1000 cars last year, a Hagerty-sponsored Concours d'Lemons, an all-British car show, and a motoring tour up to Flint, Michigan, and several GM-related sites there.

At a media preview staged in front of the Michigan Central Station, now being rebuilt by the Ford Motor Company—which acquired the station a year ago—event chairman Larry Moss emphasized ties to the deep automotive community in the Detroit area and the relative affordability of the Concours of America when compared to the storied events at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. The founder of that latter concours in Florida, Bill Warner, will be honored at St. Johns as the show's enthusiast of the year.

Grand Marshal Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars fame will participate in many of the weekend events. At a supporting journalism awards program on the morning of the show, former Car and Driver editor-in-chief Don Sherman will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement award. The Concours USA website offers the full schedule of events and links for ticket purchases.
