JULIE HYMAN: An effort to recall California Gavin Newsom looks like it was unsuccessful. "The Associated Press" called Newsom's victory less than an hour after polls closed. As of 10:00 PM 66% of the 8 million ballots counted said Newsom should stay in office. Most popular among the 46 mostly Republican challengers to Newsom was conservative talk show host Larry Elder. The special election, by the way, cost the state an estimated $276 million.

President Biden is due to host executives today to advocate for his vaccination mandate. Representatives from companies, including Disney, Microsoft and Walgreens Boots Alliance are expected at the White House to discuss how they are expanding vaccine requirements. The "Wall Street Journal" reports that Microsoft president Brad Smith, plus Disney chief Bob Chapek and Walgreens CEO Roz Brewer will be in attendance, alongside the heads of universities, hospitals, and business groups.

And SpaceX is sending the first ever all civilian mission to space. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch atop a reusable Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral as early as 8:02 PM Eastern. That's when the launch window begins. Leading the crew will be Jared Isaacman, he's the 38-year-old founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments. That's a payment processing company based in Pennsylvania.

Hayley Arceneaux, 29, a bone cancer survivor and physician's assistant at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, is set to become the youngest American to fly to space. And Brian Sozzi, this is actually, I believe, a fundraiser, this whole space flight effort here that fellow Isaacman, who is the lead person, he paid for his seat on the spacecraft.
