Cabot Planning Commission gives go-ahead for Aldi grocery store in the city

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A multinational grocery chain has been approved to place a store in Cabot.

Aldi received unanimous support from the city’s planning commission to build at its Jan. 23 meeting. The store will be located at 1118 West Main Street and Dakota Drive, which is currently vacant, commissioners were told.

The site had previously held a car dealership.

Cabot Public Works director Laura Nobles said the map approved by the commission was for an 18,400-foot store with 98 parking spots.

Prior to the commission’s vote, Brandon Harpe, with Civil Engineering Design Consultants of St. Louis introduced himself to the commission as the engineer or record for the project. He was joined by Chad Lane with the Aldi real estate division.

Aldi is known for its no-frills approach, featuring fresh produce and in-store brands. Online shopping is offered via Instacart and curbside pickup is also offered.

The chain has recently begun expanding into central Arkansas, opening a store in Conway and announcing plans to build a store in Little Rock. Multiple Aldi locations exist in northwest and north Arkansas.

Aldi was founded in 1946 by German brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht, who took over their mother’s store in Essen. The chain operates over 10,000 stores in 20 countries. In the U.S., Aldi has close to 2,000 store locations in 36 states, 1,000 of which opened in the past decade.
