Cadaver dogs scour home of accused serial killer Herb Baumeister

A team of nearly a dozen cadaver dogs is being used to search the Indiana home once owned by alleged serial killer Herb Baumeister, who took his own life in 1996 before police could interrogate him.

The home’s current owner, Robert Graves, believes interest in the accused killer was renewed by the Netflix series “Dahmer,” which delved into the similar story of Wisconsin serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, reports local station WISH-TV.

Dahmer and Baumeister were both believed to have met their prey in midwestern gay bars before luring them away to their deaths.

Graves, who has lived in Baumeister’s former house for the past 15 years, saw a team of 11 Indy Canine Search and Rescue cadaver dogs scouring his property and the woods behind it this week.

He said he’d heard the former tenant killed at least 11 people because authorities previously unearthed that many left-hand thumb bones. Graves believes that death toll to be conservative.

“Because of the sheer number of bones and the inability to DNA test them, the estimate that I was always told was 17 to 20,” he said.

The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office reportedly said canine search teams have sniffed out areas that will be further examined. Any evidence found will be reviewed by law enforcement, then passed onto University of Indianapolis Lab for testing.

Graves said he thought about his house’s former inhabitant when he first moved into the Hamilton County, Ind. property, but now only thinks about what is believed to have happened there when asked. Graves said he hopes whatever investigators find can bring closure to loves ones of people who went missing while the 49-year-old alleged serial killer was alive.

The county coroner’s office last week asked relatives of men who may have been victims of foul play in the 1980s and 1990s to submit DNA samples.
