Cade Klubnik trick play sets up touchdown for Clemson football in ACC Championship vs UNC

Clemson football got ahead of UNC with a trick play to set up a touchdown and conclude the first quarter of the Atlantic Coastal Conference championship game Saturday.

Following a UNC fumble, freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik handed off to running back Phil Mafah, who threw a short pass back to Klubnik. Klubnik ran 19 yards to position Clemson at the UNC 4. The Tigers immediately capitalized with a touchdown run from Mafah with 35 seconds remaining in the first.

Klubnik took over for starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei during the Tigers' third possession in the first quarter after he failed to get any first downs. Klubnik immediately capitalized with a touchdown in his first drive on a 1-yard pass to Davis Allen, and led Clemson to take the 14-7 lead with a score from Mafah.

The backup quarterback scored his first rushing touchdown in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead.

Klubnik made appearances in eight games for the Tigers, totaling 11 completions for 98 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Through the middle of the second quarter of the ACC championship game, he made 7 completions for 127 yards with a passing touchdown and rushing score.
