Cadillac Williams named interim coach for Auburn football

AUBURN — Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, who served as the running backs coach under Bryan Harsin, will be Auburn football's interim head coach, the university announced Monday evening.

The university fired Harsin on Monday morning after going 3-5 through the first eight games of his second season. Williams will now lead the Tigers through the final stretch of their regular season, with home games against Texas A&M and Western Kentucky and away games at Mississippi State and Alabama left to play.

The news of Williams being elevated to the interim position was reported by multiple outlets, with On3 being first to report the news.

Williams, 40, played four years at Auburn in the early 2000s and holds the program record for rushing touchdowns in a career with 45. He is also second all-time in career rushing yards with 3,831, behind only Bo Jackson. Williams was an all-American in 2004 and also helped the Tigers to an undefeated season that same year.

After Auburn, Williams was chosen fifth overall in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and went on to enjoy a seven-year NFL career, predominantly with Tampa Bay, where he logged over 5,000 yards from scrimmage and 25 touchdowns.
