Cadillac Williams says he interviewed for Auburn football's coaching vacancy

AUBURN — Hugh Freeze was officially introduced as Auburn football's next coach Tuesday morning. Athletics director John Cohen led the search to find Freeze, which ended Monday night when the former Ole Miss and Liberty coach was hired by the university.

During the monthlong search, Cohen vetted multiple candidates, and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams confirmed Tuesday he was one of the people who sat down with Cohen for an interview.

"That was about a week ago," Williams said. "I did have the opportunity to state my case, but look, that's old news. Like I told them whenever they brought me the news, honestly, they looked more disappointed than me. They were like, 'I'm sorry.' But I'm like, I'm disappointed, (but) I'm not upset."

Williams was elevated to interim head coach on Oct. 31, the same day former coach Bryan Harsin was fired. Williams helped lead the Tigers to a 2-2 record in his tenure, including a win over Texas A&M on Nov. 12 in front of a sold-out crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Before Freeze was introduced Tuesday morning, Williams made a post on Twitter saying he was being promoted to associate head coach. Freeze said Williams will also coach running backs, the position he played at Auburn and in the NFL.

"Honestly, I'm learning," Williams said. "The good Lord has been so good to me these past four weeks. I had to ask the Lord to kind of guard my heart because, of course, I was a little disappointed about me not getting the opportunity to be in this seat.

"But again, it's God's timing. I get to learn from coach Freeze and a lot of guys that he's going to bring on the staff have been a part of football (for) a long time. ... I'm just excited to continue to learn and soak things up and learn from one of the best college football coaches."
