Cairo PD, GBI make arrest in 2021 murder case

Oct. 9—CAIRO- After more than two years of investigations, the Cairo Police Department in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations has arrested Joshua Jones, 17, in connection to the murder of Derrick Herring.

Herring was found deceased in May of 2021.

According to initial reports, Cairo Police officers responded on May 9, 2021, to gunshots in the area of the 800 block of 8th Street NW.

Upon arrival, officers found Herring had been shot and was deceased near the road. Officers then called the GBI to assist in investigating Herring's death, which was being investigated as a homicide.

Tips eventually led to the arrest of Jones, who at the time of the death was a juvenile, but will now be charged as an adult with murder and aggravated assault.

If convicted of murder as an adult, Jones could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.

GBI Special Agent In Charge Jamy Steinberg expressed his appreciation for all the information that led to the arrest of Jones and eventual closure for the Herring family.

"With every homicide case we investigate, it is our focus and intent to resolve the case as quickly as possible," he said. "Sometimes, witnesses and evidence dictate our timeline on when we can accomplish this. We keep working the cases regardless of obstacles, with the intention of seeking justice for the victims and their families."
