Cake candles set dorm bed ablaze

May 3—WILLIMANTIC — An Eastern Connecticut State University student burned her fingers after candles on a birthday cake set a dormitory bed on fire Friday.

According to Willimantic Fire Chief Marc Scrivener, the call came in at 4: 24 p. m. for the fire, which was at Nutmeg Hall. The dormitory is at 6 Village Road.

Scrivener said one student reported burns on two fingers.

He said the student declined ambulance transport and went for care by a privately- owned vehicle. Scrivener said he didn't know where that student went for care.

He said an Eastern Connecticut State University officer dumped water on the bed to make sure the fire was out. Scrivener said the fire was out upon the firefighters' arrival to the scene.

He said the top of the bed was damaged.
