Cal Poly student dies of apparent brain aneurysm after meeting family for dinner

A Cal Poly student died Friday night after suffering an apparent brain aneurysm shortly after having dinner with her family, the university announced in a news release on Saturday.

Sofia Padoan, a third-year nutrition major from Walnut Creek, had returned to her residence after the meal when she collapsed, according to the release.

She was rushed to the hospital emergency room, where she died.

Padoan was the president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and a member of the Italian Cultural Association, Spanish Club and Nutrition Club. She was also pursuing a minor in Italian.

“The university is in touch with Sofia’s family, and our hearts go out to them and Sofia’s friends as they grieve their loss,” President Jeffrey Armstrong and Vice President for Student Affairs Keith B. Humphrey said in the university’s announcement.

They reminded students and faculty that counselors are available for anyone who needs them.

Students can reach out to Counseling Services (Building 27) by calling 805-756-2511 or call the Crisis Line at 805-756-2511.

Assistance and support services are also available by contacting the Dean of Students Office at 805-756-0327 or deanofstudents@calpoly.edu.

“It is never easy to share news like this, and we know that processing this loss can be difficult for members of our community,” the university added. “Please know that we care about your well-being and strongly encourage you to utilize the resources below if you need additional support.”
