The third annual Coastal Home & Lifestyle Showcase will be May 13 in Oak Island.

The third annual Coastal Home & Lifestyle Showcase will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at Middleton Park Ext., 4610 E. Dolphin Drive, Oak Island.

This outdoor show will highlight over 40 businesses that specialize in home maintenance and repair, outdoor living and supporting a healthy and active lifestyle. There will also be music by Nowcat and food by Dutch Girl Dogs.

The event is open to the public. Admission is free. Oak Island will suspend paid parking in the area adjacent to Middleton Park during the event. The area adjacent to Middleton Park includes town parking lots and designated parking slips between SE 46th Street East to SE 49th Street.

Hurricanes and coastal weather hazards in NC

The Museum of Coastal Carolina presents its Sandbar lecture: "Hurricanes & Coastal Weather Hazards in North Carolina." The educational presentation will feature Victoria Oliva from the National Weather Service, 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 9.

Oliva will speak on hurricanes and other coastal hazards.

Hurricanes bring many hazards to the Carolina coast, including storm surge, inland flooding due to heavy rain, tornadoes, strong winds, rip currents, and large waves. Oliva will cover various threats and resources such as hurricanes, local and national forecast products, and tips to help you prepare for the hurricane season. Non-tropical coastal hazards will be covered as well, including coastal flooding, waterspouts, and beach safety.

Oliva has a master's degree in atmospheric science from North Carolina State University. She is the surf program leader at the National Weather Service Wilmington, as well as the winter weather lead.

The museum is located at  21 East Second St., Ocean Isle Beach.

Brunswick Town Chapter DAR

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Brunswick Town Chapter will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 10 in person and by Zoom. A catered lunch follows.

The guest speaker will be Judy Caison, District 7 Chair for North Carolina DAR. She will also install the chapter’s new officers for 2023-24. Guests are welcome to attend.

Daughters of the American Revolution is a service organization founded in 1890 for women who can prove direct, blood lineage from a Revolutionary War Patriot. The organization promotes patriotism, education, and historic preservation.

A gallery reception for Huei-Chi Connally will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland.

Through traditional oriental painting techniques, Connally hopes to share an appreciation of other cultures and inspire others to embrace creativity in the later stages of life.

Artwork displayed through May 25.

Blood drive

The American Legion John E. Jacobs Post 68 is sponsoring a blood drive, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, May 12 at the WWAY TV Studio, 1224 Magnolia Village Way, Leland. All blood types are needed.

For your convenience parking will be at the Leland Arts Center parking lot, a shuttle will be available.

Homeschool Friday: Civil War Spies and Communications

Homeschool Friday: Civil War Spies and Communications, appropriate for ages 4-18, will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, May 12 at North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport, 204 E. Moore St. The cost is $5 per student is payable at the door.

During times of war, getting a message across enemy lines can get extra tricky. Participants will have the opportunity to explore history through hands-on activities, stations, and take-homes.

Calabash's 50th anniversary

Calabash, a small fishing town in Brunswick County known as the "Seafood Capital of the World," will celebrate its 50th anniversary, noon-8 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at Calabash Community Park, 868 Persimmon Road.

Events will feature a Rubber Duckie Race on the Calabash River, around noon (depending on tide), and live music at 6 p.m. with the Blackwater Band, on the waterfront, corner of Oak Street and Riverview Drive.

History in miniature: Using Models to Visualize the Past

The Wilmington Plastic Modelers Club will be meeting 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport, 204 E. Moore St.

The club's theme will be "History in Miniature: Using Models to Visualize the Past." There will be all types of ships, planes, tanks, and cars on display.
