Caldwell takes two from Catawba

Feb. 14—LENOIR — Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute's baseball team recorded a pair of victories over Catawba Valley last weekend.

The Cobras won on Friday 17-4 in eight innings in Hickory, before prevailing 14-7 on Saturday at Walker Stadium.

At Henkel-Alley Field, Hayden Setzer belted two home runs and doubled with RBIs to bounce Catawba from the unbeaten ranks. Setzer batted 3 for 4, including a three-run blast in the first.

Garrison Burrell also homered in the first, as the Cobras went up 5-0.

In the fifth, Bo Davidson and Jacob Bebber each unleashed two-run homer. Burress' RBI made it 10-1.

Bebber ripped a run-scoring double in the sixth — giving him four RBIs for the day.

It was 12-3 heading in the seventh, when Setzer and Breon Ishmael each tagged two-run homers.

Luke Malcon picked up the win on the mound, fanning four in six innings while yielding four hits and three earned runs.

Setzer was the winning pitcher in game two, striking out four in 4 1/3 innings with two walks, four hits and one earned run.

The Cobras (4-1) have defeated Catawba (2-2) in four straight meetings.

Ishmael again homered, a three-run shot, and in the finale plated four runs in going 3 for 5. He has four homers on the young season.

Down 5-3 in the third, Aaron Gaines delivered a run-scoring double and Steven Smith smacked a two-run double with two out as Caldwell regained the lead 8-5.
