Caleb Shermoe has huge performance in Fowlerville's bounce-back football win

FOWLERVILLE — Fowlerville senior Caleb Shermoe couldn’t have done much more Thursday night in a 26-14 victory over Midland Bullock Creek.

Shermoe intercepted two passes, caught a touchdown pass and caught a 2-point conversion.

Both of his interceptions came with Bullock Creek threatening to score. He picked off a fourth-and-15 pass from the Fowlerville 25-yard line with 1:56 left in the first quarter and sealed the victory by intercepting a pass from the Gladiators’ 27 with nine seconds remaining.

“He’s improving daily, just like the entire defense,” Fowlerville coach Jon Fletcher said. “They’re doing a really good job of staying together and communicating on the back end. They took a big step forward and improved this week.”

It was a bounce-back victory for the Gladiators, who were beaten 36-13 at Corunna in their opener. Fowlerville lost at Bullock Creek last season, 33-27.

“We had a really good week of practice,” Fletcher said. “It was the first week of school, so there’s a lot there, but the kids came in focused and ready to compete and improve in a lot of areas, which they did. It showed tonight.”

Hanna didn’t have to throw often, but was effective when he did, going 4-for-8 for 80 yards and two touchdowns. His completions were to four different receivers, including scoring strikes of 48 yards to Adam Aeschliman and 13 yards to Shermoe in the first half.

“We talk about it all the time that we’ve got to be efficient when we do throw, getting high-percentage opportunities,” Fletcher said. “I thought we did a good job with that and made the most of our opportunities tonight.”

Fowlerville got out to a 14-0 lead on Aeschliman’s first-quarter touchdown catch and a 5-yard run by Evan Atkinson with 5:10 left in the first half. Bullock Creek cut the lead to 14-7 before halftime on a 2-yard run by Kale Snyder.

Shermoe’s touchdown catch in the third quarter and an 8-yard run by Blake Juopperi with 2:00 left in the game gave Fowlerville a 26-7 lead. Bullock Creek completed the scoring on a 1-yard run by Nathan Masar with 45 seconds remaining.

Juopperi ran 15 times for 94 yards for Fowlerville. Logan Koven was in on 10 tackles.

“We were able to play disciplined on defense,” Fletcher said. “Offensively, we were able to mix the run and the pass and sustain drives and give our defense rest. I thought that was key.”

Fowlerville will travel to Mason next Friday to face a team ranked No. 8 in Division 3 by the Detroit Free Press.
